WhatsApp recently boosted its file sharing capacity to 2GB and is now venturing into an exciting new feature allowing users to share files and photos with nearby contacts sans internet. This offline file-sharing feature, akin to Nearby Share/Quick Share, facilitates transfers via Bluetooth and proximity to nearby devices.
Currently in beta testing on Android, the feature requests permission to access nearby devices, the device’s photo gallery, and its location, akin to Nearby Share’s requirements for offline sharing.
A notable aspect is users can manually disable access, enhancing safety. While offline sharing has been discussed earlier, its beta testing phase suggests an imminent official release.
WhatsApp is also exploring a new method for accessing these features via a dedicated section accessible by tapping the “+” icon at the bottom of the screen.
This feature is being beta tested for Android users with version 2.24.9.14, as reported by Wabetainfo. The platform is introducing a new tab, “Recently Online,” above the contacts list, offering insights into recent activity.
“While this feature doesn’t provide a comprehensive online list of all contacts, it effectively mimics such functionality by displaying a limited number of recent active contacts, particularly when selecting contacts for calls,” the tipster highlights.
