Online PAN Card Verification: A Step-by-Step Guide

The PAN card, known as the Permanent Account Number, is an essential document for Indian citizens, serving dual purposes for taxation and identity verification. Issued in card form by the Indian Tax Department, each PAN card comes with a unique ten-digit alphanumeric code.

Initially introduced to streamline the organization of various documents such as tax payments, assessments, and arrears for individuals, PAN facilitates easy access to information and assists in aligning data concerning investments, loans, and business activities. Moreover, its implementation plays a crucial role in detecting and preventing tax evasion while broadening the tax base.

With its distinct alphanumeric code, each PAN card remains valid throughout an individual’s lifetime, holding significant importance in India, not just for fulfilling Income Tax obligations but also as a tool for identity validation.

The necessity of PAN: PAN quoting is mandatory on income tax return forms and in all correspondence with income tax authorities. Since January 1, 2005, it’s compulsory to mention PAN on challans for any payments to the Income Tax Department. Additionally, PAN is required in documents related to various financial transactions.
