Landmark Action: Elon Musk's X Corp Suspends Over 2.3 Million Twitter Accounts in India for Policy Violations During June-July

During the overlapping time span of June and July, X Corp, a company formerly recognized as Twitter and currently spearheaded by Elon Musk, orchestrated an unparalleled crackdown by imposing bans on an astonishing tally of 2,395,495 accounts in India. This sweeping action was primarily propelled by the identification of content that was promoting child sexual exploitation and instances of non-consensual nudity.

Simultaneously, the prominent micro-blogging juggernaut also eradicated 1,772 accounts that were detected to be disseminating materials endorsing terrorism within the territorial boundaries of the country.

In strict adherence to the 2021 IT Rules, X Corp diligently furnished its comprehensive monthly report as a testament to its unwavering compliance. Over the same designated timeline, the company earnestly engaged with a substantial volume of 3,340 user complaints hailing from India through its structured grievance redressal mechanisms. It is noteworthy that the dissemination of this report incurred an unexpected delay, deviating from X Transparency’s customary practice of timely release, akin to other prominent social media platforms like Meta and WhatsApp.

Notably, attempts to access the IT Rules report earmarked for the May-June 2023 period resulted in an unexpected error message: “Looks like this page doesn’t exist. Here’s a picture of a poodle sitting in a chair for your trouble.”

A noteworthy highlight emerges as X Corp addressed and deliberated upon 49 grievances intertwined with appeals against account suspensions between the time frame of June 26 and July 25. Of this collection of appeals, a solitary account suspension was eventually overturned subsequent to an in-depth review of the unique contextual circumstances surrounding it. Meanwhile, the remaining cases of suspended accounts were upheld in alignment with the company’s original decisions. Additionally, X Corp proficiently attended to 14 queries that spanned a diverse range of topics concerning general inquiries about Twitter accounts, all received during the same reporting period.

Within the assortment of complaints originating from India, the predominant category centered around abuse and harassment, amassing a substantial tally of 1,783 instances. The unfolding sequence of actions and subsequent disclosures seamlessly adhere to the mandated framework of the new-age 2021 IT Rules. These regulations necessitate the active engagement and meticulous reporting of major digital and social media platforms, specifically those commanding user bases exceeding the 5 million threshold, ensuring transparency and accountability through monthly compliance reports.
