WhatsApp has introduced a significant update for its Indian user base, enabling them to conduct seamless financial transactions within the app. Users in India can now utilize a variety of payment methods, including UPI apps, debit cards, credit cards, and net banking. This strategic move, carried out in collaboration with Razorpay and PayU, aims to enhance the platform’s attractiveness as an all-in-one solution for both communication and commerce.
In an official blog post, WhatsApp outlined its vision, stating, “We are introducing a feature that simplifies your shopping experience while chatting. Starting today, individuals in India can effortlessly add items to their shopping cart and complete payments using their preferred methods, such as debit and credit cards, through all UPI apps currently operational in India. We are excited to partner with Razorpay and PayU to make the payment process as seamless as sending a message.”
Crucially, WhatsApp users can now utilize popular UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and others without being redirected to external platforms. This significant enhancement aims to cultivate an environment conducive to in-app transactions and encourages users to make purchases within the WhatsApp ecosystem.
This decision is in line with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s broader strategy, as he envisions business messaging as the “next major pillar” for the company’s sustained growth. A WhatsApp spokesperson clarified, “While WhatsApp Pay remains subject to user limits in India, there are no such restrictions on the number of users engaging in transactions with businesses on WhatsApp using alternative payment methods.”
Previously, the Indian market had limited end-to-end shopping experiences on WhatsApp, primarily through services like JioMart, operated by Reliance Industries, and metro systems in Chennai and Bangalore. The introduction of diverse payment options is expected to invigorate businesses operating on the platform, further cementing WhatsApp’s position as a versatile marketplace.

Concurrently, Meta has taken steps to enhance its business authenticity verification program, known as Meta Verified. This program has been expanded to businesses worldwide, enabling them to establish their credibility with Meta.
