Significant Surge: Organizations in India Experience 2.5-Fold Increase in AI Adoption

NEW DELHI: The adoption of AI technology by Indian organizations has surged by 2.5 times since 2017, as reported by Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Minister of State for Electronic and Information Technology. Speaking in the parliament, Chandrasekhar emphasized that while AI holds immense potential, concerns surrounding safety, trust, and potential harm persist.

“ChatGPT, a Large Language Model (LLM) introduced by the US-based OpenAI, is playing a pivotal role in India’s digital economy and innovation ecosystem. However, addressing apprehensions about safety, trust, and potential harm remains a priority. NITI Aayog has released a series of papers on Responsible AI for All,” the minister stated in response.

Chandrasekhar further elaborated that AI adoption has soared by 2.5 times, with language processing, robotics, computer vision, and image processing finding diverse applications across education, health, finance, mobility, e-commerce, manufacturing, and more. The government has also hinted at the possibility of formulating global regulations for AI technology.

The minister informed that discussions about AI took place during the G7 Digital and Tech Ministers meeting held in Japan in April 2023. In a collaborative statement, the participating countries acknowledged the importance of assessing the opportunities and challenges posed by these technologies in the short term, while also continuing to prioritize safety and trust as technology advances.

Moreover, there are plans to convene future G7 dialogues centered around generative AI. These discussions could encompass themes such as governance, safeguarding intellectual property rights including copyright, enhancing transparency, combating disinformation, addressing foreign information manipulation, and promoting the responsible utilization of these transformative technologies.
