Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PM-GKAY) is a scheme as part of Atmanirbhar Bharat to supply free food grains to migrants and poor. The Centre has named its new free food grain scheme under the National Food Security Act, 2013, as ‘Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY)’, the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.

The center provides 5kg of free food grains to the poor each month under this program. This is in addition to the subsidized (Rs 2-3 per kg) ration provided to families covered by the Public Distribution System (PDS) under the National Food Security Act (NFSA). The food grain and the amount may be variable.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana, 5 kg ration is given per person, that is, if there are 5 people in a family and the names of four other people along with the head of the family are also included in the ration card, then on that person’s ration card, according to five people About 25 kg ration will be received. In the year 2020, the PM Garib Kalyan Yojana was started in the month of April, which is continuing even further.

Wheat has been allocated to 6 States/UTs, – Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Gujarat, and rice has been provided to the remaining States/UTs

Updates in Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana 2023

In the budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the year 2023, it has been announced to take forward the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana. The government has extended this scheme for another year, which means that the beneficiary will receive free rations for the next year. This scheme will continue to provide free rations to approximately 80 million people until December 2023.

Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana Objective

There are many such families in the country who are financially impoverished and make a living as laborers. Sometimes people are so poor that they cannot afford to buy food for themselves. That is why the government started the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana, because under this scheme, the government provides ration to the eligible people, allowing those people to take food through the ration provided by the government and avoid the problem of malnutrition.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, while making Budget 2023 announcements, said that Rs 2 lakh crore for the entire year will be borne by the central government under ‘PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana’. This scheme is aimed at supplying free food grains for one year to all Antyodaya and priroity households, FM said.

Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana Eligibility

• Families belonging to Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and Priority Households (PHH) categories will be eligible for the scheme.
• PHH are to be identified by State Governments/Union Territory Administrations as per criteria evolved by them. AAY families are to be identified by States/UTs as per the criteria prescribed by the Central Government:
• Households headed by widows or terminally ill persons or disabled persons or persons aged 60 years or more with no assured means of subsistence or societal support.
• Widows or terminally ill persons or disabled persons or persons aged 60 years or more or single women or single men with no family or societal support or assured means of subsistence.
• All primitive tribal households.
• Landless agriculture labourers, marginal farmers, rural artisans/craftsmen such as potters, tanners, weavers, blacksmiths, carpenters, slum dwellers, and persons earning their livelihood on daily basis in the informal sector like porters, coolies, rickshaw pullers, hand cart pullers, fruit and flower sellers, snake charmers, rag pickers, cobblers, destitutes and other similar categories in both rural and urban areas.

1. Beneficiaries can quote either their ration card number or the Aadhaar number to any Fair Price Shop dealer across the country.
