Encouraging Healthy Eating Habits in Children: A Lifelong Foundation
Promoting healthy eating habits can begin early in a world where our children face increasing pressures on their physical and mental health. As adults, trying to change our diets and combat cravings and lifestyle-related diseases can be challenging. However, instilling mindful eating and a healthy lifestyle in our children from a young age can create a strong foundation for a balanced and resilient life. Our experiences as parents have made us deeply aware of the lasting impact that the food we provide our children can have on their well-being.
So, how can we raise children who are conscious eaters? Sheela Krishnaswamy, a dietitian, nutrition and wellness consultant at Slurrp Farm and Mille, emphasizes the importance of establishing an “enabling environment” where children can understand and enjoy the benefits of healthy eating. She suggests that leading by example, adopting healthy eating habits ourselves, and ensuring nutritious foods are readily available at home are effective ways to achieve this goal.
When it comes to influencing our children’s preferences for high-salt or sugary foods, Krishnaswamy recommends preparing meals with minimal sugar and using natural sugar alternatives like jaggery or honey for younger children. She emphasizes that sweets don’t have to be an everyday indulgence but can be reserved for special occasions to maintain a balanced diet.
As parents, we have found creative ways to introduce our children to nutritious foods and make the experience enjoyable. The ingenuity that parents have shown in making food healthy over generations continues to inspire us. Here are some of our favorite strategies for encouraging our little ones to adopt healthy eating habits early on:
- Take Them Shopping: Nutritionist Kavita Devgan aptly describes this as an “unstructured activity” that promotes fitness and health. Grocery shopping can be an excellent opportunity for children to learn about food, make choices, and feel involved in meal planning. As they grow older, involving them in meal preparation and safe cooking activities can stimulate their curiosity and creativity.
- Make Superfoods Fun: Millets have been a cornerstone for us. Over the past seven years, we’ve dedicated ourselves to creating millet-based foods that children love and that are nutritious, from dosas and pancakes to cereals and snacks. Millets, rich in nutrients like iron, calcium, magnesium, fiber, and complex carbohydrates, should be a vital part of a balanced diet. Introducing millets through children’s favorite foods and snacks is an effective approach.
- Plant a Kitchen Garden: Cultivating a small garden, whether with potted herbs or vegetables, can be simpler than it appears. Some parents have even established rooftop vegetable gardens in urban areas. Schools also play a role in promoting nutrition education, and numerous gardening and farming activities for kids are now available. Explore opportunities near you!
- Encourage the Goodness in Food: Instead of imposing fear-based restrictions or engaging in food shaming, we strive to emphasize the positive aspects of healthy eating. Our mission is to create food that is both delicious and nutritious, allowing parents to say “yes” more often to the foods their children love without the guilt and restrictions associated with traditional approaches.
- Make Time: Being the best parents we can be is a constant aspiration. Creating healthy environments and activities for our children demands an investment of time that may not always be readily available. Prioritizing family meals and engaging in conversations with our children about food can make a significant difference. Allocating time for self-care is equally crucial, setting an example for our children by adopting healthy eating habits and balanced lifestyles.
