The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced the temporary waiver of the standard Rs. 50 fee for online Aadhaar updates until September 14. This means that Indian residents can now update their Aadhaar demographic details, such as their name, address, date of birth, gender, mobile number, and email, online without incurring any fees.
It’s important to note that if individuals wish to update their photograph, iris, or other biometric details on their Aadhaar card, they will still need to visit an Aadhaar enrollment center and pay the applicable fee. This requirement exists because biometric updates involve the scanning of fingerprints, iris scans, and other biometric data, which can only be performed using the specialized biometric scanning equipment available at enrollment centers. Additionally, biometric updates necessitate verification to prevent fraudulent activities.
But why is it essential to update Aadhaar information? The UIDAI, the governing body of Aadhaar, has mandated that Indian residents update their Aadhaar details every ten years. This measure is in place to ensure the accuracy and currency of data within the Aadhaar database.
According to the official site, life events such as marriage, migration to new locations leading to changes in address and mobile numbers, as well as personal reasons like updating mobile numbers or email addresses, are common reasons for residents to request changes to their Aadhaar details.
Furthermore, the government has introduced guidelines for updating Aadhaar details for children. These guidelines require residents to provide all biometrics for updates when a child reaches the age of 15. This ensures that a child’s Aadhaar data remains accurate and up-to-date as they grow.
The importance of Aadhaar updates lies in several factors:
- Preventing Fraud and Misuse: Regular updates help prevent fraud and misuse of Aadhaar data.
- Enhancing Authentication Success: Accurate data improves the success rate of Aadhaar authentication.
- Improving Government Services: Updated Aadhaar details enhance the quality of government services related to Aadhaar.
