Aadhaar Card Excluded as Valid Date of Birth Proof for EPFO

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has recently announced a modification in its policy regarding the acceptance of Aadhaar as a valid document for proving the date of birth (DOB). According to a circular issued on January 16, 2024, Aadhaar details will no longer be considered as a valid proof of DOB.

The decision was prompted by a directive from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), as highlighted in their circular dated December 22, 2023. The UIDAI circular emphasized that while an Aadhaar number can be used for identity verification, it should not be regarded as a valid proof of the date of birth.

In their communication to EPFO, UIDAI clarified the unique nature of Aadhaar, a 12-digit identification number issued to residents after undergoing the enrollment process, which includes submitting demographic and biometric information. UIDAI pointed out that at the time of enrollment or updating, the date of birth is recorded based on the resident’s claim and the supporting documents submitted, as specified on the UIDAI website.

In light of this, EPFO has duly removed Aadhaar from the list of acceptable documents for establishing one’s date of birth. This change reflects the adherence to UIDAI guidelines and ensures that other acceptable documents are considered for verifying the date of birth of individuals associated with EPFO.
